The Brain

Recover from Brain Injury or Concussion

A head accident or injury can cause immediate pains or long-term difficulties. In addition to the physical pain, brain injuries and concussions can affect cognitive abilities, memory, concentration, responsiveness and even mood.

Our Occupational Therapists have expertise in brain trauma and concussion treatment and cognitive behaviour therapy. PiOT even offers an exclusive program for post-concussion syndrome.

HERE'S HOW

We Can:

  • Complete a VOX Neuro test that uses EEG-based neurotechnology imaging and functional testing to literally see how your brain is preforming and pinpoint which core mental functions to treat.
  • Complete an Occupational Therapy Functional Assessment to determine the cognitive strengths and weaknesses of a person and the treatment required.
  • Conduct an Enhanced Cognitive Assessment to provide both objective findings on brain performances as well as a thorough assessment of a person’s functional abilities. It combines VOX Neuro and an Occupational Therapy Functional Cognitive assessment.
  • Implement Cognitive Rehabilitation Programs to identify a person’s cognitive strengths, challenges and functional difficulties. They then re-learn how to do certain activities or to determine new ways of accomplishing them.
  • Complete a Brain FX Assessment which helps understand a person’s neurofunction for mild to moderate dysfunction by using a tablet to conduct an interactive cognitive assessment. This assessment can also be done virtually.
  • Enroll a person in the Learn to Thrive with Post-Concussion Syndrome workshop, which is an innovative program that’s exclusive to PiOT. It takes a holistic approach to help people manage post-concussion symptoms, improve mental health and develop a positive outlook. Learn more about the program here .
  • Provide CogMed Memory Training that uses technology to help improve working memory, brain processing capacity, concentration and learning.

The Body

Get Treatment for Spinal Cord or Orthopedic Injuries, and Amputations

Recovery from an injury to the spine, bones or limbs can take a lot of time to heal.  Sometimes the injuries are life-altering and may lead to amputations. Re-learning basic functions and adapting to a new normal can be frustrating.

Our Occupational Therapists can patiently assist a person with mobility challenges, train on using equipment and help develop strategies to manage pain.

HERE'S HOW

We Can:

Train on wound management to keep wounds clean, avoid skin chafing, ulcers or irritation, and help skin heal properly.

We are trained to administer programs that focus on disability reduction, like Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP), and can educate on proper body mechanics and sleep techniques.

Training on prosthetic use and care for arms and legs.

Make referrals for any vehicle modifications that may be needed to help a person drive safely, when needed

The Mental & Emotional

Manage Mental Health, Emotional Well-Being and Chronic Pain

Injuries from an accident are not limited to the physical ones. The mental or emotional impact from an accident and any life changes that may come from it are common challenges. Anxieties and chronic pain syndrome can also affect the ability for a person to get through each day.

Our Occupational Therapists can help address some of these “invisible injuries.”

HERE'S HOW

We Can:

Assessments for Mental Health and Function to determine the effect of the mental health impairments on a person’s daily functioning and what areas they need assistance. We work closely with a person’s psychiatrist or psychologist to assist with recovery from mental illness.

Provide Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) through a 10-week, goal-oriented and practical program with to change patterns of thinking or behaviour that are behind a person’s difficulties, become better at problem solving and effectively deal with emotional issues.

Develop a Practical Pain Management and Education Program to help with pain prevention and self-management skills in everyday activities. We are trained to administer the Progressive Goal Attainment Program (PGAP) to help reduce disability and chronic pain. We also educate on strategies for proper body mechanics and sleep.

Getting Back to Work or School After an Accident

Returning back to the workplace or school after an injury can be challenging. Assessing a person’s readiness to go back and giving them strategies to manage the changes can make the transition easier.

We can help equip a person with the right tools to succeed and advocate for their needs.

HERE'S HOW

We Can:

Advocate for the equipment, modifications and other changes needed at a person’s workplace or school so they can better function.

Conduct a Job Site Assessment to identify the physical, cognitive, mental and emotional requirements of the job and see if a person is suitable to do it.

Complete a Physical Demands Assessment (PDA) to objectively analyze the physical and environmental demands of each task in a job, like lifting, pushing or pulling.

Conduct Cognitive and Mental Demands Analysis to determine a person’s cognitive and mental abilities to handle things like planning, multitasking, emotional effects of work or school, and provide coping strategies.

Provide Physical, Cognitive, Mental and Behavioural Coaching to give a person physical, behavioural and mental health strategies that will enable them to perform their job or complete school activities safely and effectively.

Develop a Community and Social Re-Integration Program for strategies that help with performing tasks in the community, like taking public transit, mobility at work or school, and interacting with others.

Driving

Start Driving Again After an Accident

The idea of getting behind the wheel again after a motor vehicle accident can cause anxiety. Injuries may have altered how a person needs to drive. Our Occupational Therapist can help with the transition back to driving again.

HERE'S HOW

We Can:

Assess a person’s ability through a clinical interview and an on-road evaluation with an Occupational Therapist and a licensed driving instructor. Our assessments are done in a way to reduce anxiety levels.
